dd Install

I have come up with a fairly easy method for installing AMIX without a tape drive. It is a little hackish, but it works. I have succesfully installed 2.01 and 2.03 using this method. I have at least two reports of successful installs from other people using this method as well. It works!

You should glance over this thread on amiga.org, particularly if you are using AmigaOS as there are posts there from people much more knowledgeable than myself regarding installing using AmigaOS. Their info is incorporated into this document. Thanks guys!

Differences between this method and the original install method

First, obviously, no tape drive is required. Second, the original install method gives you choices of what to install on your system. This method doesn't do that, it just installs everything. Third, the package management system will be useless, since we are just dumping the install image to the hard-disk. That is ok though, there are not AMIX packages anymore (if there ever were).

Required hardware

In addition to a machine capable of running AMIX, you will need something with at least 160MB free to hold the install image, and it has to be able to be connected to a supported SCSI controller (ie: the A3000's internal controller). It is entirely possible to do the installation using only one hard-drive, however it is probably easier if you have two hard drives: one to install AMIX on, and one to put the install media on. Both methods are described.

Note that you can also do this using only AmigaOS, if you wish (and you have the hardware necessary to get set up).
